Instant Games
Instant games are a type of web game built to get more players to try them. Small file sizes and specialized delivery methods help make that happen.

Small first. More when needed.
An instant experience is a delivery strategy, not a single engine or a promise of zero downloading. Lightweight builds reduce the initial payload. Progressive loading adds assets while the game runs locally. Cloud streaming runs the game elsewhere and sends video; it is a different architecture.
Some engines specifically target instant gaming, while others document ways to reduce download size and startup time. Explore Defold Instant Games, Babylon Lite's lightweight approach, Unity's web build optimization, and more.
Target Platforms
| Destination | Player experience | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Your website | A direct link to your game | Choose an engine and renderer for your audience's browsers. |
| YouTube Playables | Games inside YouTube | Publishing access and runtime requirements need platform confirmation. WebGPU acceptance is not assumed. |
| Facebook Instant Games | Platform-integrated HTML5 experiences | Defold documents an integration; current platform access and renderer acceptance need verification. |
| Google Play | Native Android distribution and progressive downloads | Play as you download is different from browser play. Google Play Instant was retired in December 2025. |
| Apple App Clips | A lightweight native experience attached to a full app | App Store review and native delivery requirements apply. This is not a browser-game upload portal. |
Engine choices for a fast start

Babylon Lite
Keep the first scene focused and load only the assets it needs. WebGPU browser support remains a separate requirement from download size.

Three.js
Choose the rendering features you need and plan your own loading strategy. The library gives you control, rather than a ready-made instant-platform integration.

PlayCanvas
Design a small opening scene and organize assets around the player's next step. Check the target platform's loading and integration requirements before publishing.

Unity
Scope the first playable moment before committing to a web build. Measure the actual payload on target devices rather than assuming a native project's size will translate.
